Five flavors of Adobe Commerce

Adobe Commerce is not one product — it is a family of five. Each is designed for a different scale, ownership model, and budget.

The five flavors

  1. Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service (SaaS) — arriving June 2025.
  2. Adobe Commerce Optimizer — arriving June 2025.
  3. Adobe Commerce Cloud (PaaS) — managed hosting on AWS or Azure.
  4. Adobe Commerce (on-prem) — the licensed version, self-hosted.
  5. Magento Open Source (on-prem) — the free version, self-hosted.

Commerce versus Open Source

Commerce is the licensed product, intended for enterprise clients. Pricing starts at $25,000 per year and scales from there based on annual Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) and Average Order Value (AOV).

B2B is a free add-on to Adobe Commerce and Adobe Commerce Cloud.

Open Source is the free version, suited to smaller merchants who can either staff their own team or work with a system integrator. There is no Adobe support or ticketing — you rely on your internal team or your SI.

Historic nomenclature

  • Magento Community Edition (CE) → became Magento Open Source.
  • Magento Enterprise Edition (EE) → became Magento Commerce → became Adobe Commerce.

You will still hear all three names in the wild. CE and Open Source are interchangeable in conversation. EE, Magento Commerce, and Adobe Commerce all refer to the licensed product, depending on how recently the person you’re talking to last worked with the platform.
